SubDomain
note: only available to Member accounts and above
All members get access to their very own subdomain. For instance, the account:
username@fastmail.fm
gets to use the domain:
@username.fastmail.fm
Any email sent to any address in this domain ( anything@username.fastmail.fm ) will be sent to that mailbox.
For example, if you purchase a product from "Big Sports", you may apply the email address:
bigsports@username.fastmail.fm
This will be a unique email address containing both a unique username after the @ sign and a unique alias before the @ sign. Should spam or unwanted email be delivered to this customary unique address in the future, you will know that sender may have compromised your privacy.
So next time you register at a web site, try registering as "companyname@username.fastmail.fm". If that company starts sending unsolicited email or sells your address, simply click 'Options', and 'Define Rules' and set up a rule to reject messages to that address!
But, you should be adding a checksum: At least, read SieveChecksums, pick one you can both do in your head and program in Sieve. You want to and add something that you can use as a filter when spammers start emailing randomstring@yourusername.fastmail.fm; they're already doing that with me.
In addition, email sent to:
foldername@username.fastmail.fm
will automatically be filed into a folder called "foldername" for you.
These features are great for managing mailing lists, registrations, and for avoiding spam by setting up reject filters for addresses that get on spammers' lists.
The folder you direct into does not have to be a top level folder, but can be a subfolder or sub-subfolder. So email can be sent, for example, to "foldername.subfoldername@yourname.fastmail.fm" provided your file hierarchy contains "foldername.subfoldername".
One important point is that the folder must be all lowercase letters (no capitals) and must not include any spaces. In addition, this feature will not work it your username includes an underscore (~), since domains may not have underscores in them. Use the 'Rename' link on the 'Options' screen to change your account name if you want to remove the '~'. If you do not want to rename your account and you have access to aliases you can set up an alias without uderscores (~_) to use instead.
If the folder does not exist, the message will simply be filed into your inbox. You do not have to do anything to create these addresses, they work right now (as long as you are a member).
Note: should locate (or write some) better documentation for virtual subdomain setup if DNS is not handled by FM - ie, Kurian's EmdPost:237839 in EmdThread:25155
